US manufacturer Aventon will be selling its ebikes in Germany from spring 2026

In Spanish, Aventón means ‘ride sharing’. A new one will soon be opening up for you in Germany. US manufacturer Aventon is expanding into Germany and will be entering the local ebike market in spring 2026. Special models are to be developed specifically for the European market. Here you can find out what is known so far about Aventon’s decision.

1. What kind of ebikes will Aventon launch in Germany?

On its website, Aventon has announced its intention to expand its business to the European continent in the future. In spring, it plans to offer several e-mountain bikes, city ebikes and touring ebikes for sale here. To this end, the manufacturer intends to create a dedicated website and establish partnerships with local specialist retailers. Which of these channels you will actually be able to buy the ebikes from – one or both – remains unclear at this stage.

2. What is the strategy behind the market entry?

The expansion into Germany appears to be an attempt to gain a sustainable foothold in the European market. Aventon speaks of a long-term commitment to international growth. The German market is to serve as a kind of yardstick with which to gauge its own potential in a highly competitive environment. ‘Germany is not only the heart of European cycling culture but also one of the most sophisticated and mature ebike markets globally,’ explains company founder Jianwei Zhang. ‘We are not coming to Germany just to be another brand. We are bringing innovation, future-forward production processes, simple accessibility, and our passion for the product.’

The California-based company is not starting from scratch with its project. A team based in Munich began initial preparations back in early 2025. Its focus has been on combining global experience with local expertise.

3. Will US models from Aventon now be permitted in Europe?

It will be exciting to see exactly which path Aventon will take. Simply transferring the models available in North America can be ruled out. This is primarily due to the technical specifications relating to the approval of ebikes for road use. Different specifications apply on both continents.

The manufacturer’s range currently comprises a total of seven model series featuring mid-drive and rear hub motors. These are classified as Class 1 or Class 2 ebikes. In Class 1, the motor only provides assistance while you are pedalling. This means that it is a pedelec as permitted in Europe. However, the motor assistance may remain active up to a speed of 20 miles per hour (around 32 kilometres per hour) or even up to 28 miles per hour (around 45 kilometres per hour). Both limits would result in classification as an speed pedelec in Germany.

In the USA, on the other hand, a Class 2 ebike also has a throttle. This means that the motor assists you without you having to pedal. In Germany, such a vehicle is classified as an ebike and is not permitted on cycle paths.

In order to appeal to as broad a target group as possible, Aventon basically has two options. Firstly, the manufacturer limits itself to ebike class 1 and also throttles the motor assistance to the appropriate speed. Secondly, Aventon could take a two-pronged approach and design new models exclusively for Europe.

4. What ebike motor will Aventon use?

It is certain that there will be a change in the motor lineup. On its website designed for Germany, Aventon presents a mid-drive motor called Ultro. This does not appear on any of the current ebikes for the US. Instead, the Aventon A100 is usually installed as the mid-drive motor. The Aventon Ultro complies with European guidelines. In continuous operation, it is said to deliver 250 watts, which can surge to a peak of 850 watts. A maximum torque of 115 Newton metres has been announced. This would mean that the Aventon Ultro would even surpass a DJI Avinox with its 105 Newton metres in this respect.

Similar to other ebike motors, the Ultro is said to support automatic gear shifting. Aventon says that it reacts to the rider’s power, cadence and speed and selects the appropriate gear accordingly.

5. What features does the manufacturer’s ebike system provide?

The heart of the ebike system associated with the motor is called the Aventon Control Unit, or ACU for short. Based on our current knowledge, it is likely to be similar to Giant’s Smart Gateway 2.0 control centre. At the very least, it controls various smart features of the drive.

6. Who is Aventon?

Jianwei Zhang, a native of China, founded Aventon in 2013. At that time, the company sold minimalist fixies, which quickly attracted attention in road traffic with their aero frames and aero seat posts and attracted numerous fans in Europe as well.

Five years later, the product range was completely revamped and the company switched to electric mobility. Since then, Aventon has become one of the fastest-growing ebike manufacturers in North America. EqualOcean, a Chinese market research company specialising in analyses of Chinese industry, reports that Aventon shipped 50,000 units in 2020. The following year, in 2021, this figure had already risen to 100,000 units.

In terms of ebike sales, Aventon was one of the five leading brands in the segment in 2024. The agency Global Market Insights Inc. determined a market share of 29 per cent, which Aventon shared with Cannondale, Lectric eBikes, Rad Power Bikes and Trek. However, most of these sales were accounted for by Trek. According to Global Market Insights Inc., Aventon has a competitive advantage in terms of vertically integrated manufacturing. In addition, the company scores points with technical improvements, the connectivity of its models and its mid-range prices.

In October 2025, Time Magazine named Aventon one of the top five brands of 2025 in the ‘E-bikes & Pedelecs’ category in the USA. In the ranking compiled in collaboration with Statista, the company came in third place, behind Trek and Electra, but ahead of Giant and Biktrix.

According to its own statement, Aventon currently maintains a network of more than 1,800 dealers in the United States.
