Rumours about the New Avinox M2 Ebike Motor: Will the M1’s Successor Arrive in 2026?

Rumours about new Avinox M2 motor for Avinox ebike system

Update from 4th May 2026

There you go. It didn’t take long for it to become clear that there was actually some truth to the rumours. What’s more, instead of one motor, Avinox has actually unveiled two new motors. Along with three new batteries and new versions of the Avinox Control Display integrated into the top tube. All the details on the new releases you can check out here in a handy summary.

New Avinox M2 ebike drive

Original post from 16th February 2026

Less than two years ago, DJI launched the Avinox, an ebike drive that caused quite a stir in the industry. According to information from the Youtube channel E-MTB Review, the manufacturer has sold more than 30,000 units of the motor. Probably, Amflow is currently still the majority buyer with the Amflow PL Carbon. However, there are now at least 15 other ebike manufacturers that have one or more models with the DJI Avinox in their range. Business surrounding the Avinox M1 appears to be booming. At the same time, rumours are circulating about a second motor. It could be heavier but more powerful than its predecessor. Or perhaps lighter and less powerful?

1. Name no longer DJI Avinox
2. Scenario 1: Avinox M2 with more weight
3. Scenario 2: Avinox M2 with less or constant weight
4. No more rattling in the future?
5. New batteries for the motor?
6. Will DJI now launch a range extender?
7. Strict plans for the app
8. Will new brands introduce an ebike with the Avinox system?
9. When will the new Avinox M2 be released?

1. Name no longer DJI Avinox

Everything we think we know or don’t know about a new motor for the DJI Avinox is based solely on rumours and speculation. Neither DJI nor Avinox has officially confirmed anything. What is certain, however, is that the name of the drive system has changed slightly. Instead of DJI Avinox, it is now simply called Avinox. Avinox has already completed the change on its website. On the motor cover, the display frame, the batteries – everywhere in the images, only Avinox appears as the name. The same applies to the text on the website. The renaming continues in the imprint. The former SZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd. has now become SZ Avinox Innovation Co., Ltd.

The most likely reason for the change is the current trade policy of the USA under US President Donald Trump. On his instructions, the US regulatory authority, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is preparing a de facto import ban on most foreign drones and critical components for unmanned aerial systems. If this comes into force, DJI will no longer be allowed to sell most of its products in the US. DJI is likely to fear that its own ebike drive could also fall victim to this regulation. According to the German Handelsblatt newspaper, DJI is currently restructuring the group to prevent this. One consequence of this is the spin-off of Avinox as an independent company.

2. Scenario 1: Avinox M2 with more weight

In the rumour mill of the bike industry, two possibilities are considered conceivable. In the first case, a motor is expected that could weigh around 300 grams more than the Avinox M1 with its weight of 2.52 kilograms. If this happens, it is assumed that the Avinox M2 will generate a constant torque of 120 Newton metres and deliver a peak power output of 1,000 watts. So far, these values can only be achieved for 30 seconds in boost mode. If the higher torque were to be available continuously, it would make sense to make the motor housing and parts inside the motor more robust. This would inevitably mean a higher weight.

3. Scenario 2: Avinox M2 with less or constant weight

Other users assume that Avinox will launch a slightly slimmed-down SL version of the M1 with the M2 later this year. Such a light version is expected to have a lower torque. The sales price to bicycle manufacturers could also be lower. In this scenario, it is easy to imagine that the drive could become attractive for ebikes that do not require the massive propulsion of a full-power e-mountain bike. If we are honest, a current Avinox M1 seems a bit excessive on an urban ebike like the Velo de Ville Revo-C. City ebikes, e-gravel bikes, e-road bikes and trekking e-bikes would still be perfectly adequately motorised with a lower power output and a torque of 70 to 80 Newton metres.

4. No more rattling in the future?

Practical experience shows that the Avinox M1 motor produces a rattling noise on some ebikes. This tends to occur when coasting down bumpy descents. Among others, Francis Cebedo reports on his YouTube channel E-MTB Review that Avinox is allegedly using newly designed bearings and triple seals in the new motor. As a result, all parts on the axle would have less play than before, which should eliminate the annoying rattling.

5. New batteries for the motor?

There are also likely to be new developments in terms of batteries. In forums such as the EMTB Forum founded by Rob Hancill, there is talk of a new battery with a capacity of 1,000 watt hours. That would be 200 watt hours more than the current most powerful version. The dimensions are said to remain the same. For those who already ride an ebike with a DJI Avinox, this would be ideal for a retrofit upgrade to an even greater range. The same could happen with the current smaller 600 watt-hour battery. This would then offer 800 watt-hours for the Avinox M2. Whether the range would actually increase with the new motor depends, of course, on its energy consumption.

6. Will DJI now launch a range extender?

What Avinox’s ebike drive has been missing so far is a range extender. It appears that this will remain the case. Francis Cebedo claims to have learned that the developers at Avinox are not big fans of range extenders. Their favourite is a permanently integrated battery with a constant form factor. This would have the advantage that the ebike would always behave the same way while riding. Instead of working on a replacement battery, Avinox prefers to use the most advanced battery cells. With their help, the dimensions can be maintained while the capacity increases due to the better cells.

7. Strict plans for the app

A rumour reported by Alex Boyce, alias Alex Bike Tester, on his Youtube channel is likely to cause little enthusiasm. He announces that the next generation of motors may require the use of the Avinox app. Without the app, only the first 100 kilometres with the ebike would be approved.

For the record: Usually, you can ride any ebike without using an app. With most of today’s systems, this would mean foregoing a number of helpful features such as electronic anti-theft protection or the ability to analyse your own riding data. Nonetheless, you would still be able to successfully get from A to B with motor assistance. In addition, you retain control over which companies you share your private data with and which you don’t.

8. Will new brands introduce an ebike with the Avinox system?

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, numerous brands have already jumped on the DJI bandwagon. And there are many indications that more names will be added. At EMTB Forums, for example, Merida, Nukeproof and Mondraker are mentioned as potential candidates. What is interesting about Merida and Mondraker is that both brands traditionally use mainly Bosch and Shimano motors. If the rumour proves to be true, Avinox would apparently once again be taking market share away from two large established suppliers.

9. When will the new Avinox M2 be released?

Whether, and if so, what truth there is to the rumours listed here about a new Avinox M2 should become clear soon. All sources consider it quite likely that a new motor will be released as early as spring 2026. Given the many years that people such as Francis Cebedo, founder of the Mountain Bike Review and Road Bike Review websites, and journalist and test rider Alex Boyce have been closely associated with the bicycle industry, it would be surprising if none of the scenarios described above were to come to pass. So, stay tuned. 😉

    1. Hello,
Actually, we don’t know yet. However, it looks like we might know more next week. Amflow has announced news on their website for April 9th. It’s quite possible this has to do with a new motor.
      Cheers, Matthias
