The New Avinox Front Light for Ebikes Looks Stylish โ€“ and Somewhat Like a Supernova.

DJI Avinox Front Light ebike headlight

Until now, Avinox by DJI was a fairly good ebike system featuring the usual components such as a motor, battery, control units and display. Now, the manufacturer has introduced its first real accessory. The headlight, simply named Avinox Front Light, looks good on paper. However, it is strikingly reminiscent of two ebike headlights from a renowned German manufacturer.

Oval shape. Black metal housing. Compact dimensions. Modern reflector composed of several mirrors. The Avinox Front Light wants to make it clear at first glance that it strives for excellence that lives up to the standards of the electric drive. And the information provided by DJI at the launch suggests that this goal can indeed be achieved.

The housing is made of a magnesium-aluminium alloy. According to the manufacturer, this is even used in aviation. Inside the headlight, various LEDs are combined with a reflector. Its individual mirrors are designed to distribute the light as evenly as possible. We have not yet been able to test the lamp. Furthermore, DJI has not provided any images showing the light distribution of the front light. Therefore, we cannot yet assess how well the headlight will actually illuminate trails and roads.

2. Headlight lightweight, but how bright is it?

However, the light emitted by the Avinox Front Light sounds like a really bright light. In high beam mode, the headlight reaches a maximum of 1,200 lumens. In low beam mode, the luminous flux amounts to 500 lumens. In the process, it stresses the battery within an expected range. The power consumption ranges between 7.5 watts and 17 watts. To ensure that the headlight delivers maximum performance for as long as possible, even under the highest load, ribs on the housing are designed to dissipate unwanted heat into the environment.

At just 105 grams, the Avinox Front Light seems relatively light to us. After all, it measures 69 millimetres in length, 53 in height and 51 millimetres in depth โ€“ so it’s not exactly tiny. We’ve already mentioned the metal housing. However, many ebike owners will probably be able to cope with this additional weight. At least, that’s what the manufacturer expects. โ€˜Weight is one of the biggest considerations for ebike accessories, and we believe riders will be very impressed by how light our front light is,โ€™ says Ferdinand Wolf, Product Experience Director at DJI.

3. Did Avinox copy Supernova?

Unfortunately, we don’t know how much Supernova likes the new ebike light. It is quite possible that the lighting specialist from Gundelfingen in Baden-Wรผrttemberg is less than enthusiastic. After all, with the right label, the new product could easily pass as a Supernova product. Both the shape and technical design of the Avinox Front Light are strikingly similar to the Supernova M99 Pro 2 or Supernova M99 Mini Pure.

So it’s no surprise that a user named โ€˜Supernovaโ€™ left the following comment under an article about the new Avinox headlight on the German Velobiz online portal. “Avinox is entering the lighting business โ€“ interesting, the new front light is very reminiscent of the Supernova M99 Mini. DJI had samples and information from us to improve compatibility. Apparently, they studied it very thoroughly.” The content suggests that the opinion comes directly from Supernova employees โ€“ although this can only remain a guess. It would explain the external similarities between the Avinox and Supernova products. Let’s see how this story unfolds.

4. No sales in Germany at launch

For the time being, DJI is starting to ship the headlight in question. The first recipient is Chinese manufacturer Amflow, which is installing the lamp on its Amflow PL e-mountain bike. DJI has announced sales in Australia, Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Spain and the United Kingdom at a price of 199 euros. Germany is missing from this list. Velobiz speculates that this could be due to pending approval for road use in Germany.
