Follow these steps:
- Always lock the ebike to a fixed object, otherwise, it can simply be carried away.
- Guide the lock through the frame – not just through the front wheel. If you only secure the front wheel, it can be detached, and the rest of the bike stolen.
- The lock should not rest on the ground. Otherwise, thieves can use the ground as leverage for bolt cutters to apply more force.
- Leave as little room as possible between the lock, the bike, and the post. Where there is no space, there is no room for a car jack or crowbar.
- Turn the keyhole downwards or towards the bike. This makes “picking attempts”, the skillful opening with special fine tools, more difficult and also protects against rain.
- Use two different locking systems. This requires different tools and scares off most thieves immediately.

This code encrypts your place of residence, the street, and your initials. It drastically lowers the resale value, as the bike is immediately recognizable as registered. It also makes the police’s work much easier: If your ebike is found, it can often be assigned directly to you using the code, without complex database queries.
Important note for ebikes and carbon frames: Do you have a carbon frame or a very light ebike with thin-walled tubes? Then classic engraving is often not suitable, as it could damage the structure and potentially jeopardize the warranty. In this case, use adhesive coding. These special stickers are difficult to remove and are the safe alternative for sensitive frames.

Given the high purchase costs of an ebike, suitable coverage is a must. This brings us to the topic of ebike theft insurance. Basically, you have the choice of insuring your bike via an extension of your existing household contents insurance or via specialized ebike insurance.
While household insurance often only pays if the bike is stolen from a locked cellar, specialized ebike insurance offers significantly more comprehensive all-round protection. The most important component is theft protection, which applies not only when the complete bike is gone but also in the event of theft of parts (e.g., saddle, battery).
The protection goes far beyond theft. Specialized insurance usually covers damage caused by vandalism as well as costs arising from accidents or falls.
