More power for your ebike. That’s what the Bosch Powermore 250Wh Range Extender battery promises. In this tutorial we explain how to mount the Powermore battery on your ebike and which ebikes the Powermore Range Extender is compatible with.
The Bosch Powermore battery was developed for the new Bosch SX system, specifically for the Bosch Performance Line SX motor and for bikes with this motor. On the software side, the Powermore battery is also compatible with all other Bosch Smart System motors and can therefore theoretically be used on all ebikes equipped with the Smart System. However, there is a “but”. For this to work, your ebike manufacturer must have previously activated the “Powermore Range” option in the software of your ebike. The problem is that you cannot find out whether the option is activated via the Ebike Flow app. Only a specialist dealer can do this with the Bosch software. So if you want to know whether your ebike is Powermore compatible, you will have to go to your specialist dealer. In the Bosch diagnostic software, the latter will then have an overview and will be able to tell you whether the “Powermore Range” box is checked. You can also ask the manufacturer directly whether your model is already configured for the Powermore battery. A small clue that can already indicate that you can use the Powermore battery can be found on the socket mounted on your ebike. This already has two small holes on the left and right that indicate that you can already use the Powermore Range Extender. See image below.
The “Powermore Range” option
If the “Powermore Range” option is not activated on your bike, there is only one solution: contact your manufacturer directly and ask if there is a possibility of updating your bike’s software. If this is the case, you can then have this update done at your specialist dealer via the diagnostic tool. But this has nothing to do with a classic update of the Ebike Flow app, which works for all Bosch Smart System bikes. This is really an update designed by the manufacturer for your ebike so that it can be Powermore compatible. This is the only way to be able to use it on your ebike. If you install the Range Extender and connect it to the ebike while your ebike is not Powermore compatible, you will immediately receive an error message on the display and in the Ebike Flow app stating that your ebike is not “Powermore Range” and that you cannot use it. This means that there is really no way around this problem. In this case, contact the manufacturer. You can solve this error very easily by removing the Powermore battery from the ebike, restarting the bike and restarting the Ebike Flow app. The error should then be eliminated from the system.
If the “Powermore Range” option is activated on your ebike, you can now order the appropriate installation kit. This of course consists of the additional battery itself and a small mounting plate that you can mount on the bottle cage using these two screws and of course a suitable cable. You should pay attention to the length and the cable outlet that is suitable for your bike because this cable is available in many lengths and with two different cable outlets. You should therefore make sure that you choose the right cable for your bike before ordering.
A bottle cage adapter is also included. You can put this on the holder when you are not using the Powermore battery. You then have a classic bottle cage on your ebike. Depending on where you want to place the Powermore battery on your ebike and where the socket is on your bike, you will need a connection cable of different lengths. In our case, we want to mount it here in the classic way on the down tube at the corresponding holes. I would like to give you the following advice on this subject: take a piece of string of varying length and start from the lower hole where the Powermore battery will be attached. With this string, imagine the position of the cable up to the socket. Mark the length with your thumb and then look with a ruler or a meter what the distance is. In our case, this would be about 32 cm. Then, when ordering the kit, make sure to choose the length that is most suitable. We recommend that you opt for a slightly longer cable for more room to maneuver. Choose the version that is most suitable so that the cable can be passed as cleanly as possible along the frame.
After determining the cable length, all we have to do is find out which cable outlet we want to use. There are two possibilities: either the cable outlet to the down tube or to the seat tube. You can easily determine this using your charging socket. I will demonstrate this with the cable we have here. This is a cable with an outlet to the seat tube. This means that if we plug the cable into the socket, the cable is directed downwards, in line with the seat tube. For the version to the down tube – unfortunately, we have not yet had this cable in hand – we assume that the cable is in the direction of the down tube. In this case, this variant would be the best version for this bike, because the cable continues directly to the side and to the Powermore battery. In our case, let’s just take the cable to the seat tube and once plugged in, we can still run it quite neatly along the frame. Feel free to check out the Powermore battery product page with its many cable options on our online shop. Now it’s time to screw and mount our Powermore battery.
- This is quite easy, just mount the mounting plate in the right direction on the ebike. In our case, on our KTM Macina Style730, we do this here on the down tube and simply unscrew the standard bottle cage screws on this KTM.
- Next, let’s take the bracket. Here we have to be careful to install it in the right direction. For this, there is a small mark at the top, it says “top”, so this side must be placed upwards. For assembly, we recommend in any case to use the screws supplied, because they have the right strength and length so that the bracket is perfectly fixed to the down tube. The whole thing is then mounted like a bottle cage.
- First, you have to screw it in with the two screws. When both screws are relatively tight, we can still move the bracket as we wish, higher or lower. I would perhaps put it higher because our cable is quite long.
- Screw it firmly. The mounting plate for the Powermore battery is now installed on your bike.
We can now clip the Powermore battery. This also works very easily by sliding it onto the bracket from the right side. And you have certainly heard it, there was a click, which tells you that the Powermore battery is engaged and that it is well fixed here on the down tube.
- There is a small mark at the top, it says “top”, so this side must be placed upwards
- Cable with an outlet to the seat tube
- The Powermore 250 Range Extender and the PowerTube 750Wh are both marked active in green
Now all we need is the connection to the ebike. Here it does not matter whether you start by connecting the cable to the Powermore battery or to the socket. I will start with the Powermore battery.
- The cable socket also has a small safety mechanism that prevents the cable from coming loose while you are riding.
- We attach it to the charging socket of the Powermore battery.
- We plug it in and by pressing the two safety clips a little, it is securely attached to the Powermore battery.
- And then we take the other end and insert it into the charging socket. In our case, we have chosen a cable that is too long. For example, we can adjust it with a safety clip to better pass it along the frame. The assembly of the Powermore battery is already complete.
If you want to remove the cable from your charging socket, there is also a safety mechanism here that prevents the cable from coming loose while you are riding. That is why you must pull this small mechanism upwards to unlock everything, because here there are also two safety clips that are released when you pull upwards to prevent you from losing it.
Once you have mounted the Range Extender, you can turn on the ebike. The latter automatically recognizes that I have a new battery. It simply warns you that the battery is low on charge. The display also shows us the charge status of both batteries, on the one hand the standard integrated battery and on the other hand the additional Bosch Powermore battery. Of course, we can also follow all this in the Ebike Flow app, see the parameters of your bike and its components. And there too, we see that the Powermore 250 Range Extender battery and the PowerTube 750 watt battery are both marked active in green. This means that the installation has worked well. If you do not need the battery because you are planning a short ride, you can disconnect it and remove it from the ebike when it is switched off. Unclip the battery – the cable can remain with the battery – and, if necessary, mount the bottle cage so that you can use it as a classic bottle cage with the integrated battery. The change is really very quick. So we have reached the end of our video.
Using the Powermore battery alone
I have another little tip for you or a little advice. You can also use the Powermore battery alone, for example if you have a light e-MTB and you want to lighten it further for a very short tour or if you really only need very little energy. I think this is a great feature for those who want to watch the weight of their ebike. Once again, I advise you to check beforehand that your bike is Powermore compatible before embarking on this assembly. If necessary, ask your manufacturer if the option can be activated and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask them in the comments. We will try to answer them as best we can.
