Update 19th April 2022

With the Ride 60, Fazua has brought another drive onto the market. It follows on from the Ride 50, but takes a different approach in important details.

Original post 1st September 2021

About half a year has passed since Fazua gave its brand a refreshment and renamed its drive to Ride 50 Evation. Now the product family is being expanded. Ride 50 Trail and Ride 50 Street are the names of the two new products. As the names reveal, they are specifically designed to meet different requirements. For e-bikes from model year 2022 with a Fazua motor, it is therefore worth taking a closer look at which system is installed. In addition, you will soon be able to replace an existing Ride 50 Evation with Ride 50 Trail or Ride 50 Street.

2. Fazua Ride 50 Trail and Fazua Ride 50 Street – The differences

Up to now you could easily keep track of Fazua with featuring only one drive system. Now the situation has changed somewhat. Two new variants have been added to the already established one. We discuss the details so that you can decide which drivetrain best suits your needs.

1. Fazua Ride 50 Trail and Fazua Ride 50 Street – The similarities

Basically, the Ride 50 Trail and Ride 50 Street from Fazua are updates of the Evation system. The motor and gearbox have been technically developed further – at a level that is reflected in the entire drive system. Trail and Street differ only slightly, however. That’s why the focus is first on the similarities between the two.

Fazua itself estimates the increase in performance of the revised engine at ten percent. According to the manufacturer, this is directly related to a ten percent increase in efficiency. As a result, the energy consumption of the battery is reduced. In the end, you should gain slightly in range despite the same capacity.

Lighter and quieter

The weight gain for Trail and Street also plays a role here. The entire system is six percent lighter than the Ride 50 Evation and now weighs 4.4 kilograms. All e-bikes with the new drive systems benefit from this further improved weight-to-power ratio. Even the noise level, previously already at a low level, is said to have decreased further. How this will be noticeable in reality, however, depends on how each bicycle manufacturer integrates the drive into the respective e-bikes. Of course, Fazua is sticking to the modular design. E-bikes with this drive can still be ridden with the Drivepack including motor, electronics and battery – or you can remove the Drivepack and ride an regular bike.

Better power transmission and more stable connections

Lighter and slimmer are also the two attributes that sum up the changes to the bottom bracket. The housing around the angular gear takes up slightly less space. In terms of weight, this results in 100 grams less than before. In terms of perception while riding, the new freewheel is probably even the more significant detail. Its 40 teeth mean 67 percent more than before, which should ensure a faster power transmission. On the outside of the bottom bracket, you can still use your old spider. This is compatible with each other. Cranks can still be attached using an ISIS mount. Incidentally, the cover with the crank mount will be black in the original and not silver, as shown in the picture.

For the second generation of the bottom bracket gearbox, Fazua has paid additional attention to the connections. The interfaces to the drivepack and the control units have been surrounded with plastic to increase their stability. Those of you who are a little more vehement when connecting or disconnecting in future will be less likely to cause mischief. The cover for the bottom bracket will continue to come either directly from Fazua or be a proprietary development of the respective bicycle manufacturer.

Detailed work on the motor and drivepack

Consisting of motor, electronics and the Energy 250X battery, the drivepack of the Fazua Ride 50 Trail and Fazua Ride 50 Street is also largely identical. The leap forward in development compared to the Ride 50 Evation is the new motor. Stronger magnets are said to be responsible for its higher efficiency. The torque has remained almost the same. The previous 55 newton metres are now replaced by an available 58 newton metres.

Apart from that, two other external changes are noticeable. The new cover of the drivepack has a large recess. The idea behind this is to make it easier to remove and insert the battery and to clean the cover. The capacity of the battery remains unchanged at 252 watt-hours. And you can still use the old downtube cover.

Fazua has also changed the cover for the USB mini-connector. Previously, this was behind a screwed plate. This effectively prevented dirt and moisture from accessing it. At the same time, getting to the interface required a little more patience. Now you will find a fold-out rubber cover. A small safety catch ensures that it always remains “dangling” from the drivepack, even if you forget to click it back in place. Should the cap break off or get lost in some other way, Fazua offers a single replacement for it.

  • Maximum power (electric): 450 watts
  • Rated power (electric): 250 watts
  • Capacity: 252 watt hours

2. Fazua Ride 50 Trail and Fazua Ride 50 Street – The Differences

Given the many similarities, the differences almost tend to get lost in the shuffle. In principle, we are only talking about the new design of the radiator. The heat exchanger on the drivepack makes it easy to distinguish between the three drive variants Trail, Street and Evation.

In the Fazua Ride 50 Street, the fins are arranged at a fairly small distance from each other. This structure is intended to guide the direction of the air flowing past in a targeted manner and provide the necessary cooling effect. Fazua speaks of convective airflow cooling. In any case, it looks quite aerodynamic. This member of the Ride 50 family is intended for e-bikes that you primarily ride on the road and in urban environments. In this environment, experience shows that average speeds are so high that air cooling proves to be particularly effective.

On the other hand, due to the ground conditions and often more demanding route profiles, the driving speed off-road is usually lower. This means that the air flows by more slowly and contributes less to the temperature exchange. Fazua responds to this with more open ribs. The slightly larger gaps promote the emission of thermal energy and thus ensure the cooling of the drive. The approach also has the advantage that the exterior can be cleaned more easily because the fins are further apart. You know the principle from the different tyre treads, for example. Those intended for off-road use have larger distances between the lugs so that dirt that has accumulated can either be loosened during the ride and removed more easily afterwards.

Open system allows update of existing drivetrains

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the new drive variants are not only installed as standard in e-bikes, but are also offered as an option for upgrading the Ride 50 Evation. Fazua has not yet finalised what such an exchange will cost. It will probably be around just under 1,000 euros.

You can be surprisingly flexible in deciding what exactly you want to replace. Both the system as a whole and each individual component are possible. Fazua has made an effort to ensure extensive backwards compatibility. This is not only convenient for you, but also very welcome from the point of view of sustainability. For example, if you want to, you can combine bottom brackets and drivepacks of different drive variants with each other. The following options are conceivable:

Bottom Bracket + Drivepack

Ride 50 Evation + Ride 50 Trail

Ride 50 Evation + Ride 50 Street

Ride 50 Trail + Ride 50 Street

Ride 50 Trail + Ride 50 Evation

Ride 50 Street + Ride 50 Evation

Ride 50 Street + Ride 50 Trail

The associated battery is usually always the Energy 250X.

The new drive variants will be accompanied by a comprehensive firmware update. The Black Pepper update from 2020 serves as a benchmark here.

According to Fazua, specialist dealers should be able to respond to your requests for a change to the Ride 50 Trail or Ride 50 Street from the 4th quarter.

  1. Hi ,
Just bought a Pinerello Nytro ebike Gravel with the Fazua system in Canada. How can I get a spare battery ?
    Thanks ,
    Raj

    1. HI Raj,
If it’s a Pinarello with FAZUA RIDE 50 EVATION, the battery is here. Since it’s a dangerous good, shipping offshore is not cheap, so kindly ask info@ebike.com for a quote.
      Thanks
      Cheers,
      Luca

  2. Hi Matthias,
I have a Pivot eVault with the Evation system and am considering installing the Ride50 Trail.
I have no problems with the Evation however a bit more range and perhaps power would be nice.
Is it possible to purchase the Ride50 system from you and have it shipped to the USA?
I am a bicycle mechanic and would expect to be able to install the system myself.
    Thank you.

    1. Hi Rodney,
Unfortunately shipping batteries oversea is legally forbidden, or it costs a fortune (some 800$). The motor alone is not for sale.

      Cheers,
      Luca

  3. I have recently purchased a Boardman 8.9e Hyb from Halford. I have noted that the drive motor is Ride 50 street as printed on the casing (RIDE50 DRIVEPACK STREET) and the battery is the 250x. But the end bracket gear box is the avation. What I would like to know, is this a workable combination? is the drive motor and battery compatible with the older gear box? and should I ask Halfords to update the gear box?
Also will I get the same performances as a bike with the updated gearbox /drive and battery ?
    Thanks,
    Malcolm

    1. Hello Malcolm,
With your ebike everything is perfectly fine. Fazua’s drive systems Ride 50 Street and Ride 50 Trail are designed to be downward compatible with the Evation drive. So, the given equipment of the bike should work quite well. In terms of the performance, we can’t provide any details, because we just haven’t riden such a combination. Maybe one of the users can help out with sime personal experience?
      Cheers, Matthias

  4. Hi. I have a Kinesis Range Gravel Bike powered by a Fazua Ride50 Trail setup. Love it and it has got me back into cycling after a number of back issues and health issues. I would like a second battery for longer rides. 2 Questions if you can help!?

Firstly, is seems Fazua energy 205X batteries are in short supply. Is there an official response as to when these will be available?

Secondly, I am taking my bike to Tuscany in Italy in September, but cannot take my battery (hopefully batteries) on the flight. Whats the best option? Should I post mine out there ahead of time or try and hire batteries when I am there? I dont want to hire a complete bike as my bike is set up and upgraded so it just right for me…

    Thanks

    Dave

    1. Hello Dave,
The availability of the battery is really bad at the moment, even in our shop. It is not possible to predict when the situation will ease a little. However, we are hopeful that it will.

If the battery is available in time, you can order it from our shop. Shipping to the UK is deactivated via our order form. But if you send us an email to info@elektrofahrrad24, we can place the order manually.

From our point of view, it should be difficult to rent one or even two suitable batteries for your holiday in Italy. Therefore, we clearly advise you to send the batteries in advance. If you know someone in Italy who would receive the batteries for you, we could also send the batteries directly to Italy. You would even save a little on shipping. But as I said, the batteries must first be available again.

      Cheers, Matthias

  5. I am in the process of upgrading my Trek E-Caliber from the Evation to the Ride 50 Trail system.
Is there anybody that I can give the old motor and drive too?

  6. I have Trek Domane+2020 with the new Ride50 Street and attaining 150 klms on breeze mode Wonder how does this motor compare with Domane 2023 with new TQ motor as I’m thinking of changing Any ideas on benefits for changing

    1. Hello John,
Since we haven’t had any chance to test the current Trek Domane+ featuring the new TQ motor, we cannot provide any first hand advice. Nevertheless, there are two questions you should probably ask yourself. How often do you use the option to take your Domane’s e-drive off and ride it like a regular bike? If you like to stick with that, a change is cancelled since the TQ system doesn’t provide this option. The second question would be, how keen your are on saving some weight? With the new TQ drive the motor and the battery both are not removable. However, this more permanent integration leads to an even lighter weight. In terms of pure performance, both drive system shouldn’t differ that much.

  7. i have a Look e765, i just need an extra battery for me to use as back up in case i need to ride a longer miles, i am located in Las Vegas, NV. my question is where can i buy these batteries???

    1. Hello Joaquin,
Nice one getting in touch with us, thanks for that.
Until now, we don’t ship batteries to the USA. And if we would do so, it wouldn’t be probably the most affordable way for you to get one either.
Fortunately, there is a certified dealer right next door to you. At least in terms of the distances you are used to. Its name is Southwest Bikes. This is the address:
      7290 W. Azure 110, 89130, Las Vegas, United States

Other dealers you can find on the Fazua website. Just check the support menu on the top. There you’ll find the dealer locator.

      Cheers, Matthias

  8. I have the Evation 1 set up and need a new battery. The Fazua website says I have upgrade my existing remote (remote b) if I get the 250X battery but from what you state above this is not necessary and I only need to change the remote if I want to use the wake-up feature on the 250X. Is that definitely correct?

    1. Hello Geoff,
Yes, this is in line with our data. If you want to use the wake-up function, you need a remote bx or remote rx. If you don’t want to use the function, your existing Remote b is still sufficient.
      Cheers, Matthias

  9. I have an original Evation set up on a Cube . I have found the 2 plugs behind the B/B very awkward to undoe, and hopefully these have gone internal now. My b/b cover got thumped off somewhere on our broken roads, and consequently the middle of the 3 plugs lost half its outside and now it’s like Blackpool illuminations when I turn it on!
I spoke too soon; now it won’t turn on at all. if I upgrade, will the plug issue work again, or is my wiring in the bike incompatible?

    1. Hello Andrew,
the wiring in the bike should work with a new drivepack. It’s with good reason that Fazua says that the older version of the Evation drive is compatible with the newer one. What we can’t judge are the plugs you mention. Perhaps it would be better to have a specialist dealer take a look and assess whether everything is still in order.
      Cheers, Matthias

  10. I bought a TREK Domane + LT on 7/26/2022. It has the latest Fazua Ride 50 250 Watt with 58nm. The bike rides wonderfully. The main issue, and it is a big issue, is that the bike on green Economy, runs out of battery power around mile 35 (windy and hilly) or 40 miles, (little wind, 1200′ of climbing,) or maybe, if one is very diligent about turning the electric power off when going downhill or on a flat, 42-44 miles on mostly flat and low wind days. If one wants to ride 45, 50, 55, 60, or 70 miles, forget it. You will be left with a very heavy bike, 31 lbs with battery, that’s becomes harder and harder to turn that crank going up hills. I bought it from a well known local bike shop and they didn’t know anything about the Trek Fazua motor. It’s disappointing if one wants to ride distance.

    1. Hello Scott,
Thanks for impressions on the Fzaua Ride 50 drive and the Trek Domane+ LT. Probably very useful for many of our users.
We did a longer test ride with this bike as well. The plan was to go for about 85 miles and 2,000 meters of elevation. No way.
      https://www.ebike24.com/blog/test-trek-domane-lt-9-e-road-bike
However, in regard with our test I would be a little more optimistic and say something between 50 miles and 60 miles seems realistic.
      Cheers, Matthias

  11. my evation battery as given up th ghost, can I replace it with the 250x I have the b remote, and do not need the function to wake up the battery on the bike

    1. Hello Bill,
Since the Energy 250X is the standard battery for the Fazua Evation drive, this should be completely fine.
      Cheers Matthias

  12. Hello .
So the new RIDE 50 Street fauza battery and motor are better then the RIDE 50 Evation battery and motor ?

    1. Hello Bill,

yes, exactly. The new Fazua Ride50 Street motor has 10% more power than the Evation drive. This also brings with it a ten percent higher efficiency of the motor, which in turn reduces the energy consumption of the battery. This means that the Ride50 Street also allows for longer ranges, despite the same battery capacity.

      Cheers, Martin
