Are e-bikes suitable for children?
The question of whether e-bikes are suitable for children is also hotly debated among experts. Some emphasise children's natural urge to be active and therefore advocate the purchase of a children's pedelec. Others urge caution, advising that before buying a children's e-bike, parents should ensure that their children are already sufficiently confident in traffic. In any case, a child should be able to assess the risks of riding an electric bike independently. And last but not least, children should of course be physically capable of handling the greater weight of an e-bike and the additional power it provides. And although there is no helmet requirement in Germany, even the most relaxed parents understand that wearing head protection is highly recommended when riding a children's pedelec. If that is still too risky for you, most children's electric bikes are limited to a maximum speed of 20 km/h.
At what age are children allowed to ride e-bikes?
As a general rule, pedelecs are treated the same as bicycles in legal terms. This means that there are no age restrictions for riders, nor is there any requirement for insurance or a licence. However, what is permitted is not always appropriate. For normal use in road traffic, beyond the occasional trip with parents, a children's e-bike is only suitable from around the age of 14. However, children can try riding at home or on holiday from around the age of ten.
What characterises a children's e-bike?
Almost all well-known manufacturers have at least one e-bike for children in their range. In terms of appearance, they can be classified as trekking bikes, mountain bikes or city bikes. The frame shape is also not specified. What they all have in common, however, is a frame size of 24 inches and the lowest possible total weight. Due to their smaller wheel size, children's pedelecs are characterised by their greater manoeuvrability.
Accessories according to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO)
Apart from that, child-friendly 24-inch e-bikes can be equipped with everything that is required by the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), such as a lighting system, a luggage rack and reflectors.
24-inch e-bikes are not always children's e-bikes
Not every 24-inch bike is suitable as a children's e-bike. It is advisable to obtain information in advance or consult Elektrofahrrad24 for advice. Please contact us if you are unsure. We will be happy to assist you in finding the right model and provide tips on how to use your e-bike.
