Tyres & Tubes

A bicycle tyre consists of the actual tyre (also known as the cover or casing) and the inner tube. The inner tube keeps the internal pressure stable. The inner tube transfers the acceleration forces to the road and is also responsible for lateral guidance and braking behaviour. Similar to a car, the tread of the tyre is crucial for the necessary grip on the road. The inner tube is filled with air and maintains the pressure on the tyre. The pressure can be regulated via a valve. Air can be added as needed. Which tyre is suitable for my electric bike? A bicycle tyre is selected according to the corresponding bicycle type. There are pure road tyres for city and touring bikes. City and touring tyres usually have a wire ring on the side facing the rim, which holds the tyre securely on the rim. This tyre is the most commonly used. With sufficient air pressure and an appropriate tread, these tyres offer low rolling resistance. They are suitable for everyday use and have a long service life. For mountain bikes, choose bicycle tyres with a large tread. This type of tyre is much wider than normal bicycle tyres. Mountain bikes are ridden with lower tyre pressure and are primarily suitable for off-road use. Racing bikes, on the other hand, have narrow racing tyres with low rolling resistance. For better visibility in road traffic, tyre models with reflective strips on the sides are recommended.

Which tyre sizes should I choose? In addition to tyre width, tyre size also plays an important role in bicycle tyres. A distinction is made between 24, 27.5, 28 and 29 inch tyres. For mountain bikes, you can choose between tyre sizes 26, 27.5 and 29 inches. For trekking bikes, there are 28-inch tyres. The same applies to city bikes, although 26-inch tyres are also available for smaller women. Children's and youth bikes have 24-inch tyres.

Which manufacturers make bicycle tyres?
Well-known manufacturers of bicycle tyres include Schwalbe, Continental and Michelin.
