Brose

Perhaps not all of you are familiar with Brose. However, you have probably already come into contact with the company. Namely, as soon as you have driven a car. Brose is one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world. The door on your car, the seat in a taxi, your friends' electric car – Brose products could be installed everywhere.

How much experience does Brose have in the field of e-bikes?

The company's automotive tradition goes back more than 100 years. Understandably, its e-bike division is much younger. Brose entered the market for the first time in 2014 with its own e-bike drive. For several years, this was designed as an open system. This means that Brose provided a motor for bicycle manufacturers. The manufacturers then combined these with batteries and displays from other suppliers. Since 2019, Brose has been offering its own complete e-bike system with motors, batteries, displays and minimalist control units.

What characterises the Brose Drive System?

When it entered the market, Brose decided to manufacture only mid-drive motors. The manufacturer continues to pursue this approach to this day. Overall, the Brose Drive System is much simpler than that of its most prominent competitor, Bosch, for example. Four motors, three displays and control units, one battery – that's all there is to the range.

What sets Brose motors apart from the competition?

Brose compensates for mass with class. Or rather, with uniqueness. From the outset, the manufacturer's drive system was considered to be particularly quiet. The reason for this is the patented drive system, which uses a belt instead of a chain inside. This causes less noise, which is why the corresponding motor from Brose is often perceived as by far the quietest in its class.

The smoothness with which Brose drives glide over the 25 km/h threshold, at which point the motor on a pedelec stops working, is also often praised. Furthermore, they are often credited with fundamentally high performance, again in relation to the respective motor class. They already provide a large amount of assistance, even if you yourself are investing relatively little effort. At the same time, the drives are generally quite economical in terms of battery energy consumption.

Which motors are included in the range?

As mentioned, Brose manufactures four motors. Each of these is available in two versions: with an aluminium housing and with a magnesium housing. You can tell the difference in the model names of the motors by the addition of "Alu" or "Mag". The models with a magnesium housing weigh 500 grams less and are also 15 per cent smaller.

Currently installed motors:

  • Brose Drive C
  • Brose Drive T
  • Brose Drive TF
  • Brose Drive S

How is the Brose Drive system operated?

You can operate a Brose Drive system using three different control units. Two of them, the Brose Allround and the Brose Central, have a display. The Brose Remote, on the other hand, is a stand-alone control unit with a few buttons and five LEDs that provide you with information.

What range can you expect from the Brose Drive System?

On e-bikes with a Brose drive, you may encounter batteries of various designs and capacities. However, Brose itself only manufactures one battery, the Brose Battery 630, which can be integrated into the frame. Its capacity of 630 watt hours is sufficient to provide assistance over distances of around 80 kilometres to 130 kilometres. All other battery solutions come from other manufacturers and have been produced specifically for certain brands and models.

Which manufacturers rely on Brose drives?

The historically based openness of the system has ensured that e-bikes from more than 50 international brands feature a Brose Drive System. These include BH Bikes, Bulls, Johansson, Nox Cycles, Qwic, Sblocs, Poison Bikes, Rotwild and Vent. However, the best-known bicycle manufacturer to cooperate with Brose is Specialized. It uses Brose motors as the basis for its drives. Specialized only uses its own software to customise the coordination between the e-bike and the drive according to its own specifications.

What types of bicycles use Brose systems?

Given the large number of users, it is not surprising that very different types of e-bikes are equipped with Brose systems. The spectrum ranges from city e-bikes and trekking e-bikes to e-mountain bikes. In recent years, manufacturers of e-cargo bikes have also increasingly become Brose customers.
