Incredible grip is provided by the combination of aluminium and steel pins - exactly 16 steel pins and 8 aluminium pins per pedal, which protrude 5 mm. They are all interchangeable! So you stand even in adverse weather conditions safely on the bike.
That the pedals from the factory turn a little sluggish, is normal. Reverse calls this "anti rotation function". This prevents the pedals from turning further should you ever put your foot down.
