Covers for Transport and Bike Frame

E-bike transport

The options for transporting e-bikes over short distances or to holiday destinations are becoming increasingly diverse. However, there are a few things to bear in mind when transporting e-bikes. Not only are they heavier than bicycles without electric drives, they also have sensitive components that need to be protected. Nevertheless, many e-bike riders do not want to do without their own bikes when travelling. And they don't have to. If you keep a few important points in mind when transporting an e-bike, there is nothing to stop you from travelling by car with your bike.

E-bikes place special demands on vehicle carrier systems during transport

Modern e-bikes can weigh a little more than a bike without a motor – sometimes as much as 25 kilograms. Therefore, you should first find out and take into account the maximum load capacity of the car roof (usually 50 kilograms) and the bike rack at the rear of the vehicle (around 30 kilograms). Even conventional bike transport systems have their limits when it comes to securing bikes. It is not only the additional weight that plays a role here. The frame and wheelbase of e-bikes are also usually larger. Apart from that, it takes a lot of effort to get the e-bike onto the car roof. Therefore, the only real option is to use carriers that sit on the tow bar and are designed to meet the specific requirements of e-bike transport. These may even have a ramp.

What should be considered when transporting e-bikes?

In general, the battery and on-board computer should be removed and stowed away safely before setting off.

If the e-bike is to be transported by train rather than by car, for example, it is essential to plan where stairs or narrow train entrances may need to be negotiated. Anyone who cannot carry the e-bike themselves is at a disadvantage here. E-bikes are not allowed on passenger aeroplanes, as batteries are considered dangerous goods. Subject to strict conditions, it is possible to send e-bikes by air freight. If you hire a shipping company or parcel service, you must clarify in advance how safely the e-bike will be transported and what precautions will be taken to protect it from damage.

Transporting e-bikes in the rain

To protect the bike and its sensitive components during transport in the rain, there are practical protective covers available that protect the battery and connections from moisture. If your car has an interior height of at least 80 centimetres, the e-bike can also be transported in this way. To ensure that the bike does not pose a danger to the occupants or damage itself during heavy braking, it is essential to secure it with sufficient tension straps. Then nothing stands in the way of transporting your bike inside your car.
